How to Replace Garage Door Weather Stripping

Weather stripping replacement requires a caulking weapon, a container of silicone seal, a pry bar, sledge and an assortment of nails.

Garage door weather stripping is a set of sealing strips that circle the edges of the garage door. This stripping acts as a barrier against rain, dust, and other particles from getting into the garage. Weather stripping is vital to protecting the equipment and machinery in the garage and garage door opener. If water starts seeping into the garage through the door, the weather stripping must be replaced, as these water leaks can damage items in the garage. Fortunately, these strips can be replaced in a few easy steps.

Assemble the needed materials

Weather stripping replacement requires a caulking weapon, a container of silicone seal, a pry bar, sledge and an assortment of nails. It’s also useful to have a hand sweeper and a scrubber for cleaning the surface of dirt. A stepping stool is also useful for the harder-to-reach areas of the garage door.

Remove the old weather stripping

Using a pry bar and a sledge, remove the old weather stripping. Carefully slide the pry bar under the weather strip, then gently tap the bar with a mallet to remove the strip.

Clean the edges of the garage door

Using a hand sweeper and a scrubber, clean the edges of the garage door. This is to prepare the surface to stick the sealant effectively. Any dirt or debris left behind can compromise the new weather stripping, so be sure the surface is completely clean.

Apply the sealant

Use a caulking weapon to apply the sealant. Touches of the sealant should be applied along one of the weather strips. Ensure even application of the sealant along the edges of the weather strip.

Attach the new weather stripping

Align the weather stripping close to the garage door and carefully press it into the door outline. Next, ensure the strip is aligned to the edges by holding the elastic seal against the door. Lastly, nail the weather stripping at the top, bottom, and center to ensure it stays in position when the sealant dries up.

Check the alignment of the weather stripping

The last step is to check that the weather stripping is properly aligned with the edge of the door along the top. When confirmed, nail the corners to ensure the stripping stays in position. Then, apply more sealant along the edges where there are breaks. This achieves a smooth look and a perfect sealing job.

Having to clean the garage each time it rains due to poor weather stripping is not worth the effort when this stripping can be easily replaced. As soon as water starts leaking through the garage door, follow these steps to replace the stripping and keep the inside of the garage safe from weather damage.
