Exploring Common Garage Door Problems

With few moving parts, it doesn't take much time to diagnose the issue and get the door functioning correctly.

It is a frustrating and stressful experience when a garage door isn't functioning correctly. Parts can wear out or stop working due to normal wear and tear. Fortunately, the culprit is usually easily identified and remedied. With few moving parts, it doesn't take much time to diagnose the issue and get the door functioning correctly.

The garage door closes even if there's an object in the way

This kind of problem needs to be diagnosed and fixed quickly. All automatic garage doors are equipped with a fail-safe system to prevent the doors from closing if an object is detected in its path. The optical or photo eye sensors emit a broken light beam if there's anything in the way. The sensors are located a few inches above the ground on either side of the door. When an object interrupts the beam, it sends a signal to the sensors to reverse the door's movement. They rarely malfunction, but it is possible.

First, ensure that both of the lenses are clean and free of debris. Then, they need alignment and appropriate calibration for them to work. If a simple cleaning of the lenses doesn't solve the problem, it's best to consult with a garage door installation professional who can further assess the issue.

Squeaking or rattling sounds

When functioning correctly, a garage door should be relatively silent. Over time it's easy to learn what sounds it should make in optimal conditions. However, loose nuts and bolts can lead to squeaking and rattling noises when opening and closing the door. Therefore one must inspect all nuts and bolts to ensure each is properly in place and tight. Always unplug the unit before the inspection.

A squeaking door is usually a sign that the rollers and bearings need lubrication. Disconnect the power supply and lubricate all rollers, bearings, and pinch points. If unsure which parts to lubricate, consult the door's documentation or hire a professional.

The door won't open or close

If using a remote to operate the door, check the batteries. Weak or fully discharged batteries won't have enough power to send the signal to open or close the door. Also, if using a wall switch, sometimes the microswitch holder inside the case breaks.

Other possible reasons for doors that won't operate correctly are a tripped circuit breaker or a lack of power. It's possible to open and close the door using its manual pull rope. This is usually a rope hanging from the central overhead unit with a red plastic handle on its end.

Diagnose common garage door problems

It's best to perform monthly inspections of all garage door components. Optical sensors can quickly become dirty with dust and grime, and rollers, springs, and bearings will require lubrication over time. Hiring a garage door specialist for annual inspections and maintenance will keep garage doors operating correctly for years.
